The Forgotten
Ishift, craning my neck so it gives an audible crack. The light is dim here as is to be expected in a crypt. I sniff, smiling despite myself at the scent of the freshly dead. Licking my lips, I turn in place, taking in the room around me.
This particular crypt isnât sunken underground. Itâs basically a large square room made of cement blocks covered in dirt and grass. The heavy concrete door is the same, with iron bars over the small window.
The torch on the back wall is still lit, illuminating a painting of a long forgotten ancestor. The paint is cracked and the color faded. I frown, willing to bet that everyone who comes into the crypt now knows nothing about the man in the painting.
In fact, Iâd be willing to bet they donât remember much about the newly deceased. Out of sight, no longer important. Soon to be forgotten.
Anger flits through my body, burning me raw. Sure, this man was likely a corrupt and needed to die. But thatâs not my concern. Another thing that makes humanity corrupt is their misguided priorities. You can literally be raised by someone who worked themselves to the bone and as soon as theyâre gone, theyâre a forgotten memory. Despite that you may owe their success and very existence to this one person, they are still forgotten when their expected time of mourning was over.
It's been three weeks since this one died. Three entire weeks. And already, their family has forgotten them. No longer visiting. No more tears. In fact, I havenât even heard any faint cries in the night at their recent loss.
This dead man has already been forgotten.
My eyes hood as I let the irritation of that pass through my body. Time to raise the dead and inform them of how well theyâre thought of in passing.
Out of my human-shaped body grows the part of me thatâs real. The Terror behind the mask. Growing up so huge that I take over the once-large crypt. The many tentacles roll out of me, suction cups gripping nothing as I spread out and overcome the space.
My vision changes, seeing the smokey images of the forgotten bowed over their decaying bodies. Faded with time as their memory dwindles a little more each second. With every breath, they disappear into the recesses of time and space until theyâre no more.
Alright. I release a breath, hissing out my annoyance as I lay my long tentacles over the newly dead body. Itâs even more fun when I bring back a long-dead but this will do for now. Maybe Iâll raise the entire crypt and let them retake the town. Bringing everyone to their motherfucking knees.
Something that resembles life flickers inside the body as I ooze will into it. The will to rise. To be remembered and live again. Sucking the soul back into the body. It withers and fights until it gets settled and then squirms as it tries to make the body fit once more.
Yes, I know itâs uncomfortable.
